The campus library: the center of an educational institution

The Whitworth Library.

The library is the center of an educational institution. The assembling of materials for the library at Northeastern Christian Junior College began [p.15] many months before the doors were officially opened for classes in the fall of 1959. The person in charge of directing these efforts was Miss Anna Whitworth of Nashville, Tennessee. Miss Whitworth, with a B.A. in history and and [sic] M. A. in library science, was well qualified for her role, having taught in the classroom and having served as a librarian for many years.

Working only with the aid of student assistants for the first five years, Miss Whitworth did the basic job of collecting and organizing the necessary ingredients for an effective and functional junior college library. In appreciation of her dedicated service, the Board of Trustees named the library in her honor upon her retirement in the summer of 1965.

Being an integral part of the Christian liberal arts college, Whitworth Library desires to make available materials for the teaching of Christian principles and development of spiritual attitudes. his service is provided not only for the college community, but also for interested Christians throughout the area who may need research, devotional, or instructional materials.

Included in the religious materials are numerous slides, filmstrips, audio and video tapes, discs, and periodicals on Biblical subjects.  Also, a rare Bible collection on permanent display attracts much attention.

Whitworth Library attempts to make its resources, including stack books, reference books, indexes, periodicals, microfiche, the vertical file, and audio-visual resources and materials, readily accessible to students. In order to facilitate library usage a basic orientation is given during the [p. 16] first or second week of the fall semester.

The interrelationship between faculty instruction and library procedures is especially close at Northeastern.  Faculty member, along with the librarians, serve as a standing committee to recommend books and audio-visual purchases. This arrangement serves to keep the library’s collection current and to help the library anticipate instructional and research needs.

Northeastern Christian Junior College Catalog 1992-94 (Villanova: Northeastern Christian Junior College, 1992) 14-16.

In 1992 Robert S. Brown, Assistant Professor, served NCJC as Librarian.  He earned the B. A. in English from harding College in 1955, the M.E.d from University of Arkansas in 1956, and the M. S. in Library Science at Villanova in 1969 (p. 79).  I suspect this was the last catalog NCJC issued.
